Track and field running is a sport that is usually done in the context of a competition or a race, which makes it incredibly important to have the right equipment on you while training for a competition, and the most important equipment, in this case, is a pair of good track and field running shoes.
In the following list of track and field running shoes, our testers tried and tested to come up with the following list of the top shoes that can achieve the improvement you are looking for.
Best Running Shoes for Track and Field In 2023
Track and field sports are a whole set of sports that include running and jumping. They usually set the place on an oval-shaped playground surrounded by a track. Players usually switch from track to field during the competition, and that needs shoes that are designed to deal with both surfaces.
Running shoes designed specifically for track and field running are light yet rough to adjust to the double nature of the playground. You can rest assured that you will do more than fine with your track and field competition by training with the right running shoes. You will also be able to avoid injuring yourself and unnecessarily damaging your joints during running. Make sure to read all the following reviews carefully before you choose what is best for you.
Brooks Launch 9 Running Shoes
This model of the Brooks Launch series has established itself as one of the fastest shoes ever produced. Brooks Launch 9 has a BioMoGo DNA foam midsole that guarantees responsiveness and a huge energy return. Even though the midsole is firm, the shoe is still flexible to some degree. Also, the overall design guarantees more than good shock absorption and smooth transitions.
The upper is made of a light and breathable mesh that offers a permanent, secure fit while being amazingly comfortable. The breathability is also great; I was quite impressed! The shoe’s outsole guarantees pretty good traction and grip, perfect for many surfaces, including track and field surfaces.
Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 Running Shoes
The Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 was made to help you succeed! With carbon plates, this design is unquestionably the company’s most avant-garde and quick-running shoe. This design blends carbon fiber plates with gentle, responsive cushioning for the most propulsion. The Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 is a top track and field running shoe since it is designed for competitions.
The competitive Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 running shoe is made to shatter all records. The upper of this Saucony running shoe, which adopts a completely new look suitable for long races, reflects most of the shoe’s most noticeable attributes. The Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 combines some of the brand’s most cutting-edge materials and technologies.
Our reviewers found that the brand’s continued dedication to innovation and the creation of fresh materials that motivate us (runners) to go further is truly reflected in this carbon plate running shoe. The performance of these shoes is also significantly influenced by well-known technologies like SPEEDROLL technology and the brand’s lightest and most elastic PWRRUN PB foam.
Nike ZoomX Streakfly – Long Distance Training Running Shoes
Nike’s performance range for road races has expanded a little further with the arrival of the ZoomX Streafly, the perfect shoes for track and field races and long distances. Light and dynamic, this latest model of the American brand is perfectly cut for rhythmic sessions and competitions on tracks ranging from 5km to 10km.
And unlike Saucony Endorphin Pro 2, Nike ZoomX Streakfly has no carbon plates. Instead, there is a midsole made of ZoomX foam along its entire length. It probably has the lightest and most responsive foam in the Nike lineup. And inside this foam, I did not find a carbon plate but a Pebax plate. The Pebax plate is located in the middle of the shoes, and I found that it allows you to find a middle ground between stability and the feeling of propulsion.
The upper is light and reinforced at the forefoot to ensure good support and a comfortable fit.
A shell has also been placed at the heel for better reception and support of the foot at this level.
And during our research, we found that Nike has analyzed data from thousands of runners to be able to come up with the best design. Which is awesome! In addition, the outsole structure would ensure good traction on all surfaces and situations encountered during racing.
Asics MetaSpeed Sky
This Asics MetaSpeed Sky has the highest sole (33mm) of all Asics carbon-plated running shoes, which might not work for everyone, but it has some other amazing features that may make up for it. Our testers noticed that the Endorphin Pro 2 and the MetaSpeed Sky have similar sole densities, but the MetaSpeed Sky is noticeably softer.
You can feel the carbon plate in the middle, but the front is softer for your toes. Despite the heel being kind of narrow for my preference, I can say that the stability of Asics MetaSpeed Sky is pretty good.
MetaSpeed Sky was not made for daily training, it was made for competitions and races; it was made to be a track and field running shoe. And I am saying that because I found that the heel seems heavy at a low speed and therefore needed a faster rhythm to activate the shoe’s amazing features. Overall, I really appreciate the opportunity to try the amazing Asics MetaSpeed Sky. It is rough, it is strong, and most importantly, it is really fast.
Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 Running Shoes
The carbon plate and ZoomX foam in these amazing shoes provide soft, bouncy cushioning to improve your performance, especially over long distances and in track and field competitions. I can say for sure that the upper of the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next 2 is one of the most comfortable uppers I have ever tried, with an airy mesh and soft padding for more pleasant and comfy support. The upper also has some reinforcements to prevent it from tearing prematurely.
The toe box is noticeably wide to give your feet more space to breathe and relax. And for the outsole, I can say it offers a pretty good grip even if its durability is always a delicate point, but this is often the case with these types of competition shoes.
I must not forget to mention that ZoomX has the best foam in the industry right now. The feeling under the foot is still just as soft for great comfort over long distances and rough competitions. In terms of traction, I find the grip of Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% 2 to be very satisfactory.
And for durability, I did not notice a big difference compared to the other Nike ZoomX models. It can take about 200-300km before the features start fading.
Puma Deviate Nitro Sneaker
The Puma Deviate Nitro is the spearhead of the latest line launched by Puma. This is the highest model in performance. It weighs about 268g, so it does not really belong to the category of light shoes. Like all carbon plate shoes, or let’s say almost all, the Puma Deviate Nitro has a fairly thick sole. It has a 10mm drop and a sole thickness of 38mm at the back.
The sole is based on a foam technology expanded by nitrogen during molding (NITRO Foam).
The upper is one piece, and the fabric used is relatively stiff; it is thin but stiff in the sense that it provides some structure.
New Balance FuelCell RC Elite v2 Running Shoes
This New Balance Fuelcelle RC Elite V2 is equipped with a carbon plate, and it is a very competition-oriented model, which is great for a track and field running competition. The thick sole is a visual signature of the FuelCell series.
The mesh is pleasant to the touch, and the upper is relatively wide. Also, the weight (245 g in size 44) is the low average for this model type. The sole offers a good grip on the track, which is appreciable when running at a high pace. The lightweight is an important asset, combined with the dynamism provided by the carbon plate and the foam. In the long run, the thick sole proved to be stable in all circumstances, but the rigidity of the whole shoe requires running at a relatively steady pace.
Nike Zoom Rotational 6 Running Shoes
Last but not least, is the Nike Zoom Rotational 6. A pair of shoes that are designed for winners. Its design has been thought to eliminate internal movements and improve stability, thus offering excellent support at the time of fast races.
There are breathability-enhancing mesh on the upper and side panels and a soft rubber outsole for durability and rotational grip. It also has a durable foam midsole for lightweight impact protection. I think Nike Zoom Rotational 6 is the simplest shoe on the list, but I have no doubt that is just as efficient and practical.
What to Consider When Looking for Best Running Shoes for Track and Field
Choosing the right track and field running sneakers for you depends on many factors that should be considered. Here are some general features you should look for when shopping for a pair of track and field running shoes.
Upper: In the case of competition, you need an upper that hugs your foot tight but not too tight. Your feet should be able to get some air to avoid overheating while running.
Cushion: You should look for a soft, cushioned pair of shoes to avoid sore ankles during a track and field running competition. You should be able to decide what feels comfortable to you by trying on several options.
Fit: When looking for any track and field sneaker, you must pay close attention to fit and size. Running shoes are designed to provide a secure fit while maintaining maximum foot control. Even so, they must still be the most comfortable shoes for your feet to allow you to run without interruption.
Outsole: A good grip is highly important in a track and field running shoe. Therefore, some people prefer to use track spikes for such events. On the other hand, we believe that quality running shoes with grippy outsoles can be an amazing choice for training, especially for beginners.
Durability: Make sure you wear a sturdy pair of running shoes when training for track and field, whether it’s to increase your speed, enhance your fitness and health, etc. All of the top track and field running sneakers on the list above are composed of sturdy materials so you can ride for a very long period.

Tips for Buying the Best Running Shoes for Track and Field Training
- Be careful about the size because the running shoe size generally differs from your usual size. In general, I recommend taking 1/2 size above your regular size.
- You should have room in the toe box for your toes, at least half a thumb width between the tip of your big toe and the front of the shoe. A shoe that is too small could cause injuries to your big toe.
- If you buy your shoes online, make sure to look for the exact measurements of the shoe, not just the size. Buying a pair of shoes online allows you to compare models with each other with detailed technical data sheets and to benefit from the feedback of other users. You can also find your shoe size more easily. While going to the store allows you to try on your running shoes and possibly reassure yourself in case of doubt about the size. So choose the method that suits you more.
- The running shoe price can vary from 50 to 200 USD. You need to decide on your budget to get a clearer picture of the available options. Do not go directly for the most expensive, even if you can afford it, just consider suitability and functionality before all.
Below are the frequently asked questions about running shoes for track and field.
Are spikes mandatory in track and field events?
The short answer is No. Track spikes are unnecessary for an athlete to participate in track and field. Durable running shoes can be enough for runners to wear.
What is the difference between track and field shoes and trail shoes?
Trail running is way trickier than track and field running. The trail surface is often bumpy and has a wild nature. Therefore it needs a pair of shoes with a thicker outsole and more protective of the feet.
While track and field running requires a more competition-oriented pair of running shoes, as it is usually practiced in the context of races and competitions.
Do these shoes prevent injury?
Running is a sport that has its risks; whether you are a beginner or an experienced runner, you are never safe from knee discomfort or ankle injury. However, understanding the mechanical stress applied to your joints will help you choose shoes to reduce that stress. It is also important to go for simpler shoes for training as they are more likely to reduce the risks of injuries and save high-technology shoes for competitions.
What brand makes the best track and field running shoes?
Each brand has its own history and stands out with technical strengths. But the best running shoe brand is not necessarily the most expensive or the one that uses the fanciest technologies. Above all, it is perfectly suited to your needs and your way of practicing running.
What is a carbon fiber plate?
Many running shoes now have plates made of carbon fiber filaments in the sole with a thickness that can vary between 10 and 50 microns (one-thousandth of a millimeter). Carbon fiber is five times stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum.
Apart from the amazing balance between strength and lightness carbon fiber plates offer, it stands out for their great flexibility and low thermal expansion, which are essential attributes of good running shoes. Even though carbon fiber was widely used in other industries, It took until the middle of 2021 to see the first running shoe with a carbon fiber plate on the market. The carbon fiber plates were found to provide stability and momentum.
To put it more simply, the carbon plate provides responsiveness because after each stride, it returns to its initial shape. This generates a full energy return to the runner’s foot which means getting propulsion from the sole and increasing efficiency while reducing energy loss.
